//------------------------------// // Changing things up // Story: Duty and shame // by Forestinsider //------------------------------// “Don’t push your luck. Once we are done here I think you will owe me a beer.” “Oh really you want to make that bet again?” “You of all people should know boy that I love to live dangerously.” “Dangerously?….I don’t know if there is anything more dangerous than this.” Forsmith became unsettled with the sudden uncomfortable wimper from foster. Again he remembered what it would end up and nowhere good. “No Foster whatever you do I’m going to assure you everything will be alright. Just stay with me.” Foster listened and got back into formation. Although he thought that all was well Forsmith heard some murmurs from his friend about his family and his home. Forsmith to thought of his home and his family. How His mother survived through the war only to suddenly collapse and die. His brother was never seen again and one day Forsmith looked into the mirror of his broken home and realized that he was the last man of his family. The last to carry the name forsmith into living memory. But he wasn’t going to let that happen. No jets nor missiles would steal humanities future away. Like going away from a trail forsmith made a rapid turn and flew to rapidly take down the enemy jet with no regard to his survival. Suddenly he felt a shock and a violent gust of wind. He had felt it before and knew what it was. He knew that his own side had resorted to obliterating a polish city to stop the Warsaw pack advance. At this moment Forsmith remembered what he thought the first time he heard the news; A seal had been opened. Foster screamed at the news and ignoring the enemy turned around and headed back west. Despite the radios demanding him to turn around Foster did not deter from his course. Forsmith knew what would happen next. He repressed the memory but it came clear as day. The radio would tell him to kill Foster and then he will obey. All of their friendship didn’t matter at the moment. It didn’t alter the decision to open the small capsule overlaying the button and pressing it with all of his might. Most importantly which he regretted was that he pressed the button without hesitation. This time when the radios instructed Forsmith to kill his best friend. They partner which helped him all the way from the first day of being part of the Air Force and now. He wasn’t going to betray his friend this time. He turned on his radio and said to the commander to “go to hell.” Shocked the commander shouted “If you disobey a direct order than you will be marked as a traitor.” With a smirk on his fact Forsmith responded “if protecting my friend is being a traitor than I’m the worst traitor. And if you want me dead than come and get me!” Suddenly all of the jets turned on Forsmith and foster and began firing without any regard. Forsmith dodged the attacks and went on to take on the collective air forces of the east and the west. To his surprise he managed to take down many jet fighters. Despite running low on ammunition he learned how to use resource’s sparingly and use them effectively to take down multiple enemies. Foster still flew away asking his friend what he was doing. Forsmith responded by saying he was protecting him so that they could see Foster’s family again. There was many close calls but he saw that the number of enemy aircraft began to dwindle. The rage of the commander nearly blew Forsmith’s ears off but he laughed that despite everything going against him he was making the right decision. He was fighting for the righteous cause that could endure through any storm. Even the storm which turned the clouds red with fury and the ground shook as the very earth collapsed. The wind blew in a thousand miles and faster than the speed of stormy waves. When all of the ammunition ran out and the jet was being surrounded Forsmith believed that all was lost. He for a while worried how Foster would survive the dead world. That he failed until he saw the jets near him exploded in a blaze of glory. For the second time in the day Foster had arrived at the right place at the right time. The clouds began to clear up and the ashes of war disappeared and with that Forsmith cheered that he had won. He did what he believed was impossible and defied everyone to save the world. Both alone Forsmith instructed his friend to meet them at a barn house nearby and they can discuss on everything. Foster did as he was told and they found a gigantic wooden barn house which Forsmith had a sense of familiarity. Landing adjacent to the barn house Forsmith got out of his cockpit and went towards foster jet to give him another embrace. Foster opened his cockpit heavily breathing and covered in sweat. Taking a deep breath Foster looked up and said “Thank you!”
